B Meet Rules

Vienna B Meet League declaration guidelines

How many strokes may I declare?

A swimmer is limited to two events and cannot swim the same stroke twice in one meet. IM (Individual Medley) counts as a stroke. Exceptions to this rule may be discussed and agreed upon by the participating team reps prior to the start of the meet.

Note: As a new change to rules starting in 2022, ALL swimmers may swim two strokes at B Meets, even those who earned points at the previous A meet.

What strokes may I swim?

Swimmers may swim any two strokes they choose.

Swimmers are encouraged to swim only the strokes that a coach has confirmed they can swim legally. Coaches may alter a swimmer's stroke declarations for a B Meet, if needed, based on skill level.

Prior years' rules restricted the strokes swum by swimmers who earned points at the previous A Meet. Starting in 2022, swimmers may swim the same stroke(s) that they placed with at the A-meet. Exceptions to this rule may be discussed and agreed upon by the participating team reps prior to the start of the meet. We do strongly encourage swimmers to swim alternative strokes from their previous A-meet (i.e., strokes that you did not swim the previous Saturday).

Will I get a B Meet ribbon?

Swimmers considered "official" at a B Meet will receive ribbons for 1st-6th place, or a Participant ribbon for 7th place and higher. Disqualified swimmers will receive Participant ribbons.

Swimmers that place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in the prior A Meet may swim as "unofficial" swimmers in the following B-meet. Cards of unofficial swimmers must be marked “unofficial” in red ink. Unofficial swimmers may not swim for place and will receive Participant ribbons. However, their times are recorded and considered official for team purposes (i.e., may be used for A Meet selection, for seeding in Individual Divisionals, etc.).

Ribbons may be collected from your family folder, found in milk crates under the pavilion.

Can my 8&U swimmer swim a 50M race at a B meet?

Generally, no. There is one exception. An 8&U swimmer who can swim a coach-timed 50M freestyle race (during regular practice) in a time that is within 2 seconds of the fastest 9-10 swimmer may swim a 50 Free race at a B Meet, to have an opportunity to compete for a Mixed-Age Relay spot.

Can I break a team record at a B Meet?

No, sorry. Our team rules state that VAC team records may only be broken at A Meets. Note that Time Trials are considered a B Meet for these purposes.
